A company called the Modern Tool and Die Company does not sound like one of the world's leading manufacturers of riding lawn mowers and other lawn equipment. But the tool and die company became MTD Products, which now produces MTD lawn tractors and owns some of the biggest brand names in the business.
This article focuses on MTD lawn tractors, which are available worldwide in a somewhat bewildering variety of models, makes, names and styles. This overview should help you find the MTD model you are looking for.
Mtd Mowers
In North America, MTD lawn tractors, and other lawn and garden equipment which are closely associated with the MTD name, are principally sold under the Yard Machines, Yard-Man, Bolens and White Outdoor brands.
But in addition to these, and among others, MTD also owns the famous Cub Cadet and Troy Bilt brands. These seem to have retained their own identities much more than those previously mentioned. However, you will find that many people suggest that the machines currently produced under the Cub Cadet and Troy Bilt brands are much more like MTD models, than like the Cub Cadets or Troy Bilt models produced when those companies were independent.
The Yard-Machines and Yard-Man ranges are relatively limited but provide good value at the cheaper end of the market. Yard-man, for example has the following models:
The 12.5 Hp, 38 inch Yardman tractor The 15.5Hp, 42 inch Yardman tractor The 22Hp, 46 inch Yardman tractor The 42 inch Select Zero Turn Yardman riding mower and The 50 inch Zero Turn Yard man riding mowers.
Thus, there are engines ranging from 12.5 to 22 horse power and cutting decks from 38 to 46 inches, together with a pair of very effective and functional zero turn mowers. The Cub Cadet and Troy Bilt ranges are far more extensive with riding mowers and zero turn mowers of varying specifications, ranging across the whole spectrum.
In Europe, MTD lawn tractors are still sold under the MTD name, with one natty model which is sold in the UK called the MTD Racing. MTD also markets the Cub Cadet range extensively in Europe and owns the Lawnflite Brand. These Lawnflite MTD lawn tractors are well-regarded in the British Isles for their ability to cope with the damp conditions that often prevail there. Most are rear discharge models which means that when linked to bagger or collection units, there is less prospect of the mechanism clogging due to the moisture in the grass than with side discharge tractors.
So, notwithstanding a history going back to the 1930's as a tool and die maker, MTD really is a modern leader in lawn and garden products. Given the extensive range of MTD lawn tractors around, MTD models are worth exploring if you are considering a lawn tractor purchase because there is bound to be one that will suit your requirements.
